Can my A8334 be used to power a MAC USB superdrive

I have a 6 month old MacBook pro. I am trying to use my anger A8334 usb-c hub to use a several year old usb superdrive with my computer. I get an error message on my mac saying the drive needs power. I thought power was supposed to flow to the drive through the hub?

Any help is appreciated

According to Apple support article HT2801 (, Apple Superdrive can only be plugged into USB ports on selected Apple computers, but not recommend to plug to a USB hub. Below is the extract:

The SuperDrive is designed exclusively for use with MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and Mac mini’s that do not have a built-in optical drive. The SuperDrive must be directly plugged into the computer’s USB port, and cannot be used if connected to a USB hub.
